Mindhive Collective and the 2011 Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival Present
You long to wear another, long to touch, and sometimes get under…
s/kin opens August 13 at the 2011 Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. Combining elements of dance, theatre, improvisation and an element of visual art, s/kin explores the walls we put up and put up with. Presented by Mindhive Collective, s/kin is a new work playing at the Academy at King Edward School, 8525 101 Street. Tickets $10.
s/kin uses performance art to explore the boundaries we’ve created and crossed within all of our lives. s/kin explores our relationships, how we take advantage of our nearest and dearest and why we avoid eye contact on the bus. Rejection and fear hold us back from the very connection we all seek. The content and creation of the piece is completely artist driven, each artist challenged their own boundaries using real life stories.
s/kin features three cast members: Tonya Rae Chrystian, Aliya Jamal, Rebecca John. Ms. Chrystian is between her first and second year at the Ecole international e de théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, France and holds an honours degree in Drama from the University of Alberta. Aliya Jamal graced dance stages for the past few years, most recently in KO Dance Project Human Gardens and Untamed Minds as part of 2011 Feats – Festival Performance Series. Rebecca John, a local theatre practitioner, recently designed and performed in Legion Blues.
Director, Brooke Leifso sought to unschool herself (she has a BA in drama from the University of Alberta) from conventions and work from the gut, integrating Anarchist principles into it’s creation. “If it didn’t come with the artist, or sit with them, it can’t be sustained and didn’t stay.”
“s/kin—a performance that crawled under my own (skin) with provoking honesty, only asking me to connect”
s/kin runs for 55 mins. Showtimes are August 13 at 10pm, Aug. 15 at 2pm, Aug. 16 at 4:15, Aug. 18 at 12pm, Aug 19. At 8pm and Aug. 21 at 6pm.
